Top 5 reasons why artists are disqualified from a call

Time after time, you submit to so many artist calls, and time after time, you are rejected. We are going to give you a secret with the top five reasons why artists are disqualified.

5. Ego.  You are an established artist and now you do not submit your best work. You assume because of your name that the jurors will just accept whatever you choose to submit.

4. Quality of images. Do not submit images that are shot with an iPad, iPhone or by you if you are not a professional photographer. Hire someone who specializes in photography that will show the quality of your art.

3. Poorly written artist statements and/or CVs. Often times the imagery is beautiful but either your CVs are not up to date or your artist statement does not reflect the body of work. Hire someone who specializes in this area.

2. Missed the deadline. You must meet the deadline. Period. If the coordinators extend the deadline or you were invited to submit after the deadline, that is different.  Otherwise, no questions asked.

1. You do not follow directions. This by far is the number one reason why artists are not selected for calls for exhibition. Read the entire call before anxiously submitting your work. This makes the difference. You take the risk of being disqualified because you might not have read one line that made the difference between you being in an exhibition or not. Do not take the risk of losing your fee because you assume you did the call correctly but chose not to read the directions. Take your time.
